A report on Verizon Maryland TelecomPioneers Activities

Maryland
TelecomPioneers 74thBeach Blowout

A message from your Maryland Chapter President

Welcome back to the second half of the Maryland TelecomPioneer Year 2008. I want to thank Nancy Mazepa, Mary Lou Foote and their many helpers who worked so diligently to make "HERSHEY PARK DAY 2008" so successful. Many thanks also to our fellow pioneers from neighboring states as far north as New York State, and as far south as Richmond Virginia for bringing so many of their friends to our fun filled day.

Paul Redline

Please remember that many activities are still planned for the rest of 2008. Life Member luncheons are scheduled in each Region throughout the state. The annual meeting, in Ocean City, Maryland is September 26 through the 28, 2008 at the Dunes Manor Hotel. Registration forms are on page 3 and on our website. The Maryland Chapter also has many more events scheduled through the end of the year; please consult the Upcoming Events section of this newsletter.

Verizon’s current work contract with the CWA Unions is due to expire at Midnight, August 2, 2008. The TelecomPioneer headquarters, in Denver, Colorado has determined that should a work stoppage occur, all TelecomPioneer activities will cease, until such time the Company and Union agree to terms. The Maryland Chapter will follow this guideline. Since nothing is certain, either way, I would encourage all Pioneer’s to go ahead and plan on attending any of our activities for the rest of the 2008 year. Any checks and reservations sent in for any function will be held and should a work stoppage occur, all checks will be immediately returned.

If you would like to join the Maryland Chapter TelecomPioneers, please fill out the application and dues card on the website at: www.verizonmarylandpioneers.org/md_signup/membership_app.htm  and return it to the Pioneer Office, 99 Shawan Road, Room G8, Cockeysville, Md. 21030. Dues are only $15.00 a year, which will be automatically deducted from your pay check at $1.25 per month. Your dues go a long way in supporting our educational programs in your children’s schools. If you have any questions, please call me on 410-382-8643 or e-mail me at: paul.redline@verizon.net

Profile: Outstanding Maryland Pioneer ‘Volunteer’ by Mary Weber

Lee Napolillo is known to many groups as ‘volunteer-extraordinaire’. To the children of Baltimore County she is known as "Miss Lee". To her four children and seven grandchildren, she is known as Mom and Grand mom and they are very proud of her many volunteer accomplishments and non-stop energy.
For 20 years Lee was an active Pioneer until retiring at the age of 69 in 1999. She first started working as a Book’em volunteer packing books after work. She loved looking at the quality children’s books that were being shipped out to the Book’em readers. After she retired from Verizon, with 33 years’ service, she launched her second career as ‘Verizon Pioneer School Volunteer". She knew exactly what she was going to do with all her spare time. She would become a Book’em Reader in addition to continuing as a Book’em volunteer book packer. Lee has read for nine years in eight Baltimore County schools, covering every class in those schools over the school year. Since she began her Book’em volunteer career she has read to over 17,739 children, and thanks to Verizon and the Pioneers gave each student a Scholastic Book. The children just love her and look forward to her school visits. No matter where she goes many times children come up to her and want to know when ‘Miss Lee’ is coming back to their classroom. Also, Lee has distributed dictionaries to five schools in support of the Pioneer Dictionary Project.
Somehow she still has time to support several other worthwhile organizations. She has volunteered at Long Green Valley Volunteer Fire Company for over 45 years and has spear-headed their very successful candy fund raiser for well over 30 years. This year, for their annual fund raiser, she made over 650 lbs. of Easter Eggs. In addition to being a very active volunteer at her church, St. John’s in Hydes, she is presently chairing the White Elephant Table and Silent Auction at their Spring Fling.

Golf Ball Drop Fundraiser

The Maryland Chapter TelecomPioneers are holding a Golf Ball Drop Fundraising event. It will take place at Maple Run Golf Course on Friday, September 12, 2008, in connection with our Annual Golf Tournament.

The ticket price for each numbered ball is $5.00. On September 12th we will drop 500 or more golf balls from a bucket truck onto a putting green. The closest ball to the pin will win $500.00, the next 10 balls will win $50.00 each and the next 25 balls will win $25.00 each for a total of 36 winners. The prize money is based on the number of tickets sold, so the prizes could change.

This fundraiser helps us fund our educational projects which include:

Book’em: Maryland Chapter TelecomPioneers buy books from Scholastics and a Pioneer volunteer will go to a school and read to the class. After the reading, each student then receives a book of their own. Over the past 12 years we have given more than 270,000 books.

Students under Construction: Maryland Chapter TelecomPioneers buy school supplies to set up a Pioneer Pantry in the school. The school will come up with one or two academic criteria that need help and the students receive pogs based on meeting the criteria. Once a month Pioneer volunteers go into the school and open up the Pantry, the students then shop for their school supplies with the pogs they have earned. To date we have 15 schools across the state with Pioneer Pantries.

Your help is needed for these educational projects….so buy a golf ball….you could be a lucky winner.

Use this link to purchase online tickets: http://www.verizonpioneers.org/Estore/MarylandGolfBallDrop2008.htm
or send a check payable to MD Chapter Telecom Pioneers and mail to: Pioneer Office, 99 Shawan Rd., Rm G-8, Cockeysville, MD. 21030. The ticket will be mailed back to you.

The Maryland Chapter TelecomPioneers thank you in advance for your participation.

When most of us think about a happy childhood memory, a special connection with a grandparent often comes to mind. Grandparents today look a little different. What is their average age? A young 50 years of age. So the stereotype of a white-haired granny rocking in her chair or baking cookies has clearly changed. Many grandparents are still involved with careers, traveling, and community activities yet they still want to be a part of their grandchildren’s lives. The Pioneers offer a great way for you to be a part of your grandchild’s life and nurture a special relationship with them…volunteering in your grandchild’s school. It can be for any amount of time your busy schedule allows…. even one hour a month reading to your grandchild’s class will make memories your grandchild will always cherish.
Talk to your grandchild’s teacher or reading specialist and ask if you can read in the classroom or help a child with their individual reading. Book’em will give a new Scholastic book to every child you read to in any classroom in Maryland, including your grandchildren. Think how proud they will be of you and the memories they will always cherish of you sharing the gift of literacy with their fellow students.
To participate in Book’em, email the Pioneers at
PioneersRead@msn.com. Tell us the school name, school address, county, teacher’s name, grade, number of students and reading date. Give us your name and company mailing address. If you are not a Pioneer, no problem, we’ll sign you up at the same time.
Other Pioneer opportunities to volunteer include our Dictionary Project (distributed to Grade 3) and Students Under Construction (school pantries which encourage students to improve in attendance, homework, courteous behavior, volunteerism or any behavior or subject the school determines the need to excel.)

A Thank You For Our Troops by Nancy Mazepa

The Maryland Chapter TelecomPioneers is partnering with the Reisterstown American Legion Auxiliary in giving a picnic for approximately 200 plus troops and their families from Camp Fretterd, Reisterstown, Md. The picnic will be on Sunday, July 13, 2008 from 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., at the Reisterstown American Legion, which is right around the corner from the Camp.
The troops will have their weekend drills then after drills meet up with their families and come to the Legion Post and be treated to a down home picnic cooked and served by the Reisterstown Ladies Auxiliary and the Maryland Pioneers. The troops and their families can also dance and sing to the music provided by Bringles Jingles. After eating they can relax with a game of horseshoes, volleyball or croquet and games for the children.
We held this picnic last year and the troops had such a good time they asked if we could do this every month. Well, we can’t every month, but once a year we sure can give them the picnic of their life.
Even the commanding officers last year were pleased with the picnic as they let the troops off early to attend the picnic and enjoy themselves. See Page 8 for photos of last year’s picnic.

November is Thank Your Elementary School (or Teacher) Month

Ever read those bumper stickers "If you can read this, thank a teacher"? In November the Pioneers are sponsoring a program which challenges employees and retirees to return to their Elementary School (or school system) and read. We will give every child you read to a new Scholastic book. What a way to thank a school or school system that sparked your quest for education and your love of reading!

If can’t go back to your school…… have you had a special teacher in your life or do you know a dedicated teacher now? Why not show your appreciation for their dedication by reading in their classroom during the month of November? The Pioneers will also give every child a new Scholastic book.

Many programs around this time of the year require monetary donations. However, this only requires giving of your time. Most class readings require as little as an hour of your time but will make a lifelong impression on the children.

All readers during the month of November will be entered into a contest and the winner will win $100 in books for the school or classroom library.

Parents:

During your Fall Back to School Parent- Teacher Conference, offer the teacher and other parents these two teaching aides that they may not be aware of:

http://www.thinkfinity.org

http://www.apples4theteacher.com

Both offer worlds of information for your children and their educators, both in and out of the classrooms.
