7000 active and life members of the Maryland Chapter contributed over 86,000 volunteer hours across the state in 2007. Book’em was founded in Maryland 12 years ago. The program has been introduced to hundreds of schools and the chapter has donated 268,320 books. Students Under Construction project began with 1 school in 1997 and is now in 13 schools reaching 4,500 students across the state. The project costs approximately $10,000.00 per school year to purchase supplies for the children to buy with pogs they earn in school. Pogs are given by the teachers for improved attendance, turning in homework, completing assignments on time, showing respect, and other areas identified by the school where improvement is needed. 6,913 dictionaries have been donated to 3rd graders since 2005. Since 1999, the Maryland Pioneers have distributed 129,461 “Vials of Life” to elderly, disabled, sick, and home-bound residents. The vials contain personal medical information that would be needed in an emergency. Painted 112 U.S. Maps on playgrounds over 12 years. In partnership with Verizon Maryland and Courage Unlimited Corporation, the Courage Lion project has touched 18,000 Maryland children. Verizon Maryland and the chapter have contributed $35,000.00 toward the project. |
